Laser Hair Removal
What is Laser Hair Removal?
The cutting-edge technology of the SMARTDiode represents the pinnacle in effective, fast and comfortable laser hair removal for ALL skin types.

Selective thermolysis is when specifically selected wavelengths of laser light are pulsed into the skin and absorbed by the darker pigment (melanin) in the hair shaft.

This light energy is converted into heat which is transferred into the hair follicle damaging the follicle and inhibiting future hair growth.
The biological process of hair growth cycles determines that a minimum of 8 treatments are required. Different human factors and clinical indications can require further treatments.

Laser Vs IPL
You may have seen some places offer IPL hair removal. This is NOT the same as the medical grade laser that we offer.
The key difference between laser and IPL is the type of light. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a broadband pulsed light source, whereas laser is a monochromatic coherent light source.
IPL technology is technically not a laser treatment. It uses a broad spectrum of light with many wavelengths meaning it leads to unfocused energy around the hair and skin area. As a result there is much wastage of energy and less selective absorption in the follicle resulting in less effective destruction of the hair. Using broadband light also increases the potential for side effects such as burns or pigmentation, particularly if integrated cooling is not used. IPLs are typically only suitable for lighter skin types (1-3 on the Fitzpatrick scale) for the most part.
Typically, IPL technology will require more regular and long-term treatments for hair reduction, so many more sessions than with laser. A diode laser will work more effectively with less patient discomfort while treating more skin and hair types than the IPL.

Unlike IPL, our Smart Diode Laser machine is pain free, permanent and works safely and effectively on ALL skin types and hair types (apart from white, grey & red hair as this contains no pigment).

Frequently asked questions
Can I treat all skin types?
Yes, the Smart Diode has been certified to treat all skin types on the fitzpatrick scale 1-6.

Can I treat white, grey or red hair?
No, as the laser process relies on a pigment to absorb light energy and convert it into heat energy, white hair has no colour pigment.

Do I need a Consultation?
Before we undertake laser hair removal treatment, we always invite you to an initial consultation free of charge. The purpose of the consultation is to ask you a few questions about your health and lifestyle so that we can make sure that laser hair removal is suitable. A thorough consultation is performed for all our clients, this includes history of previous treatments, current medication, allergies, and any pigmentary problems.

We then undertake a patch test on a small area of skin in order to make sure that your skin doesn’t have any adverse effects to our laser technology. If the patch test is successful, we can then book you in for your laser hair removal treatment at a date and time of your suiting 24 hours or more later. It will take an average of 8 sessions for satisfactory results. Some clients may only need 6, others may need 10.

What’s the difference between Hollywood, Brazilian , Skimpy and Traditional laser hair removal?
-
Hollywood – this is everything off, everywhere, including both outer & inner labia, also including bottom beard (but not buttocks, this is a separate area) Our Hollywood hair removal is the most thorough you will find.
-
Brazilian – same as a Hollywood, except for a strip on the pubis.
-
Traditional Bikini – this removes hair up to your bikini line & 3 inches from the bikini line.
-
Skimpy Bikini – inside of the traditional bikini line, plus underneath on the bottom line and hair across the top of the pubis bone.
Does it hurt?
No, it is a comfortable, pain-free experience for patients.

How many treatments are required?
For most people (unless there is a hormone imbalance) a minimum of 8 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart (2-4 weeks for facial laser) is sufficient to permanently reduce hairs in that area. After 4 treatments most people will get a significant reduction in hair density.

Can I use a sunbed after laser hair removal?
Have your last sunbed session 5-7 days before your first laser session. Your skin may not be able to recover as easily from the treatment as you are causing extra trauma to the skin which has to heal. If using sunbeds is a regular part of your life you may find it hard being told that you should avoid them for a while.
How long you sit on the side-lines is different for everyone. It depends where you have been treated and your skin type, tone and hair. Make sure you look after your skin post-laser; it will heal quicker. Also use a good quality SPF. Have a good skin routine to keep your skin healthy and supple. This will help you get back on the sunbeds faster.

What are the side effects of laser hair removal?
The most common side effects of laser hair removal are:
-
Skin irritation.
-
Temporary discomfort
-
Redness
-
Swelling
-
Pigment changes (laser hair removal might darken or lighten the affected skin, usually temporarily)
If you are concerned about any of these potential side effects please speak to your medical practitioner. That is why we always perform a patch test at least 24 hours before starting any treatment.
